Macron assures that he seeks “truth” and “recognition” of his colonial past with Algeria

The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, explained this Friday from Algiers that he wants to bet on the search for “truth” and “recognition” as opposed to “repentance” regarding his colonial past with Algeria.

In this sense, the French president has assured that “France has no lessons to teach”, so it is necessary to look at “History head-on”. “To preside is to write a contemporary history. This history cannot be based on lies (and) carelessness,” he added, according to the BFMTV channel.

Macron, on his second day of an official visit to Algeria, visited a cemetery in Algiers this Friday where he paid tribute to those killed by France, after which he plans to visit the Great Mosque of Algiers and travel to Oran.

GAS SUPPLY

On the other hand, Macron specified that Algeria is helping to “diversify” Europe’s gas supply, for which he thanked the country for increasing the volume injected into the gas pipeline that supplies Italy.

“We are not in competition with Italy (for Algerian gas),” the French president has indicated, assuring that his visit to the African country is not due to Paris wanting to ask for gas from Algiers, since it has a “low weight” in the France’s energy mix.

Beyond the gas supply, Macron has referred to the current situation of the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, in Ukraine, and has demanded that “civilian nuclear energy” not be an instrument of war”, according to the newspaper ‘Le Monde’.

“War, under no circumstances, must undermine the nuclear security of the country, the subregion and all of us. Civilian nuclear energy must be fully protected,” the French president insisted in statements to the press on the sidelines of his trip to Algiers.
