Macron asks Netanyahu to "avoid" the escalation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians

30 Jan. (EUROPA PRESS) –

French President Emmanuel Macron asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday to “avoid” the escalation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians.

“In a context of growing tensions, the president (…) has recalled the need for everyone to avoid measures likely to fuel the cycle of violence,” reads a statement from the French Presidency.

Along these lines, Macron has expressed, in a telephone call with Netanyahu, “his willingness to contribute to the resumption of dialogue between Palestinians and Israelis.”

Before this, the French president has transferred to the Israeli ‘premier’ “his condolences for the victims of the terrorist attack that struck a synagogue in Jerusalem on Friday.”

“Once again he has condemned this despicable attack,” the letter continues, in which it can be read that Macron has assured “full and total solidarity with Israel in its fight against terrorism,” as well as “France’s unwavering attachment to security” Israeli.

Lastly, the French head of state “expressed his concern over Iran’s destabilizing activities in the region”, maintaining that “increasingly worrying events” in Tehran make nuclear program negotiations difficult, while “Iranian support for Russian aggression in Ukraine exposed Iran to increasing sanctions and isolation.”

These declarations take place in a context of a spiral of violence after the death of ten Palestinians in an Israeli military incursion in Jenin, the West Bank. Near a synagogue in Jerusalem, this Friday seven Israelis were shot dead by a Palestinian.

During the weekend there have been numerous incidents carried out by Israeli settlers who have attacked Palestinians, their homes, and have burned numerous vehicles, resulting in the death of an 18-year-old Palestinian in the West Bank city of Nablus.
