The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, met in Rome this Sunday with the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, in what was the first meeting of the Italian leader at the international level.
“Our relationship is more important than people,” Macron told Agenzia Italia. “We prefer this relationship to be informal, but it is important in the context of relations between Italy and France and in regards to the European Union,” the French president commented.
“As Europeans, in neighboring countries, as friendly peoples, with Italy we must continue all the work that has been started. To succeed together, with dialogue and ambition, we owe it to our young people and our elders,” Macron said in his official profile on the network. socialTwitter.
“Our first meeting in Rome, Giorgia Meloni, goes in this direction,” he stressed.
Before writing this message to Meloni, Macron thanked outgoing Prime Minister Mario Draghi for his work.
The meeting with the new Italian prime minister lasted just over an hour, at which time Macron congratulated Meloni on her election, according to the BFMTV network.
The Elysée has indicated that the exchange between the two has been “constructive and pragmatic”, while it has allowed a “fairly general tour of the European agenda”, when dealing with issues such as energy or the war in Ukraine.
“During the meeting, although informal, all the main European files were discussed: the need to give rapid and common answers on energy costs, support for Ukraine, the difficult economic situation, the management of migratory flows”, explains the Italian presidential headquarters in a statement collected by the newspaper Repubblica.
“The presidents of Italy and France agreed on the desire to continue collaborating on the great common challenges at European level and respecting the national interests of each one,” the letter continues.
The meeting took place in a hotel in Rome around 7:30 p.m. after Macron participated in the Peace Conference of the Community of Sant’Egidio where he met the president of Italy, Sergio Mattarella.
Hours before, Meloni held her first Council of Ministers with her brand-new cabinet, which was sworn in alongside her on Saturday. During the meeting, collected by ‘La Stampa’, Meloni has made a call for unity.
