French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Gabriel Attal after holding a cabinet meeting a week after rejecting his departure following poor results in early parliamentary elections.
“Gabriel Attal has submitted his resignation to the government of the President of the Republic, who has accepted it today,” the Elysée said in a statement, in which it says he will remain in office “until a new government is appointed.”
This comes after the French president insisted on Tuesday during a meeting with his cabinet on a “majority coalition” to continue governing, as negotiations continue, especially with the right.
Attal was elected on Saturday as spokesman for the Renaissance party’s parliamentary group in the new French National Assembly with 84 votes out of 98 representatives after resigning on Monday due to the election results. Macron did not accept his departure at the time.
The acting prime minister was the only candidate to lead the group of 98 deputies formed after the second round of the French legislative elections held on July 7, in which the left-wing coalition New Popular Front won against all expectations.
Parties aligned with President Macron, led by Renaissance, are the second largest force, ahead of the far-right National Rally party, which was hoping to govern after winning the most votes in the first round of the elections.
