( Spanish) — The Peruvian Ministry of Culture announced on Wednesday the reopening of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary, which had been closed since January 21 due to riots that occurred during demonstrations in the country.

“The Ministry of Culture reopened the doors of the Machu Picchu Sanctuary after receiving the commitments of the institutions that make up the Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM), municipal authorities of Machu Picchu and Ollantaytambo, directors of the Chamber of Commerce and leaders of social organizations, to guarantee the security of the monument and transportation services so that tourists have an unforgettable experience in the World Heritage Site,” the authorities said in a statement.
He added that 38 national tourists and 45 foreigners were the first to enter, and that during the day at least 700 visitors managed to enter the sanctuary.
The statement noted that the director of Culture of Cusco, Maritza Rosa Candia, welcomed the visitors.
The Ministry of Culture has arranged to give all the facilities for entry to those who have tickets dated from January 21 onwards.
