Lunar exploration takes over the Bio Bío Theater with an open talk by José Maza Sancho and Ricardo Demarco López

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of the Apollo missions, the Department of Astronomy of the UdeC, the Center for Astrophysics and Related Technologies CATA and the Biobío Theater invite the entire community to look at the past of space exploration, to understand the present of it and marvel at the advances in the near future.

“From Concepción to the Moon in 3 Acts” seeks to unite the incredible minds of two great astronomers and popularizers around one of humanity’s desires: to reach our natural satellite, explore it and turn it into a sustainable human settlement that allows us to jump towards Mars and beyond.

The guest on Wednesday, January 4 at 8:00 p.m. is the acclaimed professor José Maza Sancho. The Doctor in Astrophysics from the University of Toronto, has become over the years one of the greatest disseminators of Astronomy at a national level, with books such as “We are Stardust” or “Mars: the next frontier”, and activities that have brought together thousands of people in different cities.

The person in charge of receiving the astrophysicist is the academic from the Department of Astronomy of the University of Concepción, a CATA researcher and former student of Professor Maza, Dr. Ricardo Demarco López. An expert in the formation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies, he is also passionate about space exploration in all its expressions, counting on a series of talks on the Apollo missions, lunar exploration, space observatories, etc.

“This type of instances are extremely important because, on the one hand, we bring astronomy to all audiences and especially to the youngest, who are the future of the country of telescopes (due to the large number of ground-based observatories Chilean). In this context, talking about astronomy is practically an obligation. And on the other hand, Lunar exploration is one of the greatest that has come in terms of science, because we are preparing to return to the satellite and establish ourselves permanently there”, commented the UdeC astrophysicist.

Each of the astronomers will be in charge of exposing one of the two great programs focused on bringing human beings to our natural satellite, Apollo and Artemis: their characteristics, the importance for their respective times, what advances they left us and, in the case of Artemis, what can we expect for the future.

Those who wish to participate in the activity can pick up their free tickets (two per person maximum) at the UdeC Astronomy Department on Tuesday, January 3 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. That same day the Teatro Bio Bío will have virtual tickets through its website www.teatrobiobio.cl.
