Lula says the Israeli government is "sabotaging" negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza with its attacks

15 Jul. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Brazilian President Luiz InĂ¡cio Lula da Silva said on Sunday that the Israeli government is “sabotaging” negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip with, among others, this weekend’s bombing of the Al Mawasi refugee camp, in which 100 people died and 300 were injured, and which he described as “unacceptable.”

“It is appalling that they continue to collectively punish the Palestinian people. Tens of thousands of people have already died in consecutive attacks since last year, many of them in demarcated humanitarian zones that should be protected,” he said on his social media profile X.

Lula has therefore asserted that he and the other political leaders of the “democratic world” cannot “remain silent in the face of this endless massacre.” “The ceasefire and peace in the region must be priorities on the international agenda. All our efforts must focus on achieving the release of the Israeli hostages and ending the attacks against the Gaza Strip,” he concluded.

The Israeli army launched an offensive against Gaza in response to the attacks carried out on October 7 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian militias, which left around 1,200 dead and nearly 240 kidnapped. Since then, the Gaza authorities, controlled by the Islamist group, have reported more than 38,500 dead as a result of the Israeli offensive, in addition to more than 570 Palestinians killed in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
