Lula advocates in Madrid for negotiating “whoever is right” while Xi Jinping puts pressure on Zelenski

Every day seems special in a war that, however, does not leave combat aside. This Wednesday, apart from the different tragic reports that come from the front, two important facts have come together in its course. One is the visit of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, President of Brazil, to Spain. Another, the first contact of Xi Jinping, Chinese leader, with the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelenski, in almost 14 months of conflict.

In the national section, Da Silva has been the protagonist in two stages of the capital. The Brazilian leader has met with his counterpart, Pedro Sánchez, in La Moncloa, and has appeared before the press. After passing through China, he has been seen on the European continent with a conciliatory message: Da Silva has opted for a “just and lasting peace” through dialogue.

The voice of Ukraine, Lula Da Silva has said, must be heard “fundamental”. And his peace formula must be taken into account, he has remarked, avoiding taking a position on whether or not Crimea belongs to this country. “It’s not me who has to decide whose Crimea is“He has affirmed, noting, in addition, that now the first thing is to “stop the war” and then “debate the territory”.

Lula says that those who have to “decide” whose Crimea and Donbass belong are the Russians and the Ukrainians

“When one sits at a negotiating tablewe have to be able to raise these things but I am not the one who is going to debate these questions. It is the Russians and the Ukrainians who must deal with these issues. I’m not the one who has to talk about who’s what. First they stop the war and then we start talking”, he has sentenced, remarking that “it’s useless” say “who is right or wrong”. The important thing is to stop the war because only in this way can dialogue be possible, it has been settled.

Pedro Sánchez, for his part, has grateful for Lula da Silva’s “involvement” in ending the war in Ukraine and has made it very clear that for this to happen “defend territorial integrity” of this country, an issue, he said, that Brazil “is defending” facing the doubts that the Brazilian president himself.

Brazil has returned to the international scene, the president of Spain pointed out, pointing out that it has certain “nuances” with respect to Lula. “I think the important thing is that Brazil is defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine.”

His second visit has been to the Royal Palace. There, without giving any further statements, Lula Da Silva met the King and Queen of Spain. Felipe VI has valued his defense of peace and has defended the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine against the “unjustifiable” aggression of Russia.

Felipe VI has underlined this position before lunch offered with Queen Letizia at the Royal Palace to Lula da Silva and his wife. It was the first official visit to Spain in his new term. “I have always appreciated his frankness and strength, as well as his vocation and determination to contribute to the greatness of Brazil,” said the monarch, emphasizing the role of the South American country and showing himself in tune with the Brazilian leader.

Xi puts pressure on Zelensky

Lula’s visit to Spain coincided with the call by Chinese President Xi Jinping to his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski. she has been a “long deep phone call” of an hour (the first since the start of the war) in which both leaders have shared “his views on the war”according to Zelensky.

With this gesture, Xi has gone a step further in the role of mediator that he began to adopt last March, when after a year of “neutrality” presented a “peace plan” to end the conflict. The West has viewed the Chinese proposal with suspicion from the beginning because, the allies pointed outwas listing towards Moscow.

The criticism that was accentuated when the Chinese leader visited the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, in what was his first visit abroad since his re-election for a historic third term at the helm of the country. Now, Xi has wanted to show that the scale is balanced and demonstrate that their position is to “promote peace and negotiations.”
