The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, was received this Thursday night in Minsk by his Belarusian counterpart, Aleksander Lukashenko, to talk about Belarus’ participation in the second phase of the training maneuvers with tactical nuclear weapons in the known as Southern Military District – which limits the regions of the North Caucasus, as well as the Crimean peninsula -.

“Let’s talk about the second phase of the maneuvers. This is possible thanks to the direct participation of our Belarusian friends, colleagues in the military field,” Putin told Lukashenko during his reception, as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.

The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Tuesday the start of a series of training maneuvers with tactical nuclear weapons to “maintain the readiness of personnel and equipment of the units”, and as a response measure to “provocative statements and threats by officials individual Westerners against the Russian Federation.

This announcement by the Russian military authorities comes several weeks after President Putin announced at the beginning of the month his intention to carry out these maneuvers in response to the “provocative statements and threats” made by several Western powers about a possible sending of troops to Ukraine.
