Fire crews were racing Tuesday to control a fast-spreading wildfire in the Los Angeles hills, home to many celebrities, as a potentially “deadly and destructive” wind storm hits Southern California. .
The arrival of the storm fanned the flames, which could be seen several kilometers away, as roads became congested with residents trying to get away from the area.
Forecasters warned that the worst could be yet to come, with forecasts indicating that the wind storm could last for several days, with isolated gusts that could exceed 160 km/h in mountains and hills.
The winds had already knocked down some trees, intensified the waves and caused an extreme risk of forest fires in areas where significant rainfall has not been recorded for several months.
Firefighters were battling a handful of small fires in the Los Angeles area, including one in the foothills of the Pacific Palisades area in the city’s west, where residents were ordered to evacuate.
The Palisades Fire quickly consumed more than 180 acres of brush and sent up a massive plume of smoke that was visible throughout the city. In Venice Beach, about 10 miles away, residents reported seeing the flames.
Actor James Woods posted images of flames moving through bushes and palm trees on a hill near his home in Pacific Palisades. The enormous flames rose between the ornate gardens of the large houses located on the hillside.
“I’m in my driveway, preparing to evacuate,” Woods said in the short video posted on the X social network.
