In a white van and without attracting attention, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador arrived in Ciudad Juárez for a private event that was completely unrelated to Monday’s fire.

“It is very sad what happened. Justice will be done,” López Obrador said.

However, he arrived earlier than planned, to avoid meeting the many migrants who gathered at the place to protest and express their discontent.

Richard Franco, a Venezuelan migrant said: “We deserve respect. We are human beings. No to xenophobia. We ask that you treat us with love, because we are not criminals. Now we ask for justice!”

Nor did he want to talk to them when he left, in the midst of the general confusion, with the migrants who stood in front of the van and did everything to get closer to the president. He argued that he will speak only with the doctors who are treating the 26 wounded.

Now there is controversy over this apparent lack of interest from the president and the authorities, and there is a lot of frustration among migrants because of what happened and because they feel that López Obrador is ignoring them. Only the residents are helping the migrants however they can and now, in addition, they are afraid that something like the fire on Monday could happen again in a shelter or refuge in the future.
