Dec. 21 () –
The Greek Coast Guard has reported this Wednesday the discovery off the coast of the island of Lesbos of the body of a baby, supposedly a child who fell from a boat that arrived in the area this month.
The Mytilene Port Authority was the first to receive notice of the body, which has been taken to a hospital for autopsy.
The coast guard recalled in a statement that on December 9 some 45 migrants arrived in Lesbos and were intercepted in a mountainous area. One of the 24-year-old women declared that her baby had fallen into the sea shortly before reaching the coast, which led to a search that she had not produced until now.
More than 2,200 migrants and refugees have perished in the eastern Mediterranean since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which has registered almost 370 deaths in 2022 alone.
