Liza Colón-Zayas admitted that she did not have a prepared speech when she became the first Latin to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series on Sunday.
“To all the Latinas who look at me, keep believing and vote. Vote for your rights,” she said upon receiving the award.
Colón-Zayas, a Bronx native who grew up in a Puerto Rican family, was honored for her role as cook Tina Marrero in “The bear”, which received 23 nominations at this year’s Emmys.
“I love you all anyway. I revere you all to the bottom of my heart,” Colón-Zayas told her fellow nominees, before thanking her mother, her grandchildren and everyone involved with “The Bear” for giving it “new life” with the show.
Colon-Zayas I previously told Variety that the Emmy nomination, her first at the awards ceremony, at least let her know that “she would have a good career.”
“And that all the struggle has been seen and acknowledged. That I have a gift. Because I have spent my whole life doubting it,” he continued.
“Let the world say, ‘We see you,’ and I dare say, ‘Here are my equals.’ Carol Burnett raised me. Meryl Streep is a queen. Sheryl Lee Ralph, too. To be in that company with those women is an incredible thing.”
