Lithuania's presidential elections end with a collapse in participation

This Sunday at 8:00 p.m. the polling stations closed in Lithuania, which chooses in the second round of the presidential elections between President Gitanas Nauseda and Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, with a participation of 49.61 percent, very far from the 59 .37 percent participation in the first round on May 12.

Five years ago, when Simonyte and Nauseda also faced each other, participation was 53.43 percent in the second round. The participation at the ballot box was 38.58 percent, to which is added 11.03 percent of the vote by mail, according to official data collected by the Lithuanian newspaper ‘Verslo zinios’.

This Sunday there were 2.4 million citizens called to the polls throughout the country, where the participation in the town of Palanga stands out (67.21 percent), while Visaginas (26.75 percent) is the one that registers the highest participation low.

In the vote on May 12, President Nauseda won 44 percent of the votes compared to Simonyte who managed to obtain almost 20 percent. The president celebrated the results that day and drew certain parallels with the elections five years ago.
