July 11 () –
The restrictions imposed by the Government of Lithuania on the transit from Russia of products such as cement and alcohol through Lithuanian territory and towards the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad have entered into force within the framework of the sanctions imposed by the European Union as a result of the war in Ukraine.
These sanctions are part of the fifth package of restrictive measures approved in April by the community block, although the EU established different dates for the entry into force of the restriction on the import and transfer of certain Russian products.
Lithuanian customs authorities have indicated that since June 18 the transit of goods subject to EU sanctions to Kaliningrad, which is located between Lithuania and Poland, is prohibited, according to information from the BNS news agency.
The measure affects up to 50 percent of goods, as estimated by the Kaliningrad authorities. The measure has been harshly criticized by the Russian government, which has described it as “aggressive and hostile”.
Meanwhile, the Lithuanian authorities have limited themselves to highlighting that they “only comply” with the sanctions imposed from Brussels and have insisted that they “will not give in” to pressure from Moscow.
