Libano-Israel negotiations (indirect) between Lebanon and Israel to close the border conflict

Representatives of both countries agreed yesterday to initiate conversations about the Earth’s border. The United States mediation was decisive, since the Israeli government released five Lebanese detainees, including a member of Hezbollah. Surprise among the ranks of God’s party, which tried to frustrate the agreement rejecting disarmament and diplomatic solution.

Beirut () – Yesterday there was an important event in Lebanon, which took the high spheres of Beirut that feared a stagnation of the military situation on the border with Israel and the direction of Hezbollah itself. In fact, the United States has given a new direction to the situation, announcing the resumption of indirect negotiations between the country of cedars and Israel in the near future, with three objectives definitely rectify the border line between the two states, currently demarcated by a provisional “blue line” drawn by the United Nations; End the occupation by the Jewish State, since last February 18, of five observation points in Lebanese territory, while the high -fire agreement of November 26, 2024 provides for the total withdrawal of the Israeli forces; Free all Lebanese prisoners in the possession of Israel.

To this end, three joint work groups will be created to deal with these three points of the agreement. The announcement was made at the end of a meeting of the Supervision Commission of the Alto El Fuego Israelo-Libanés, chaired by the American general Jasper Jeffers, in the headquarters of the UN Peace Maintenance Forces in Naqoura. According to Axios, a delegation of the US Department of the US State is expected to go to Beirut to monitor these proposals. Previously, the senior US official had met with head of state Joseph Aoun at the Baabda presidential palace, in the presence of American ambassador Lisa Johnson.

However, the question of Shebaa’s farms, part of which is still occupied by Israel, was excluded from this agreement, since Lebanese sovereignty on this portion of territory is also challenged by Syria. However, it cannot be ruled out that the installation of the new Syrian government provides the opportunity to resolve this issue, that its predecessor [Bashar al-Assad] He had always refused to address and solve.

A “gesture” of Netanyahu

When confirming the agreement from his office, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared that the Jewish state would “a gesture” towards the presidency of Aoun releasing five Lebanese prisoners held by his army. In fact, four of them were delivered yesterday to the headquarters of the Unifil in Naqoura. A fifth is expected to be hospitalized, be released today.

Citing two US officials, Axios reported that one of the Lebanese released by Israel is a member of Hezbollah. According to information from Lebanon, a total of eleven citizens of the Cedros country are currently being held by Israel. Among these eleven, whom Beirut considers “hostages”, is Imadl Fadel Amhaz, which was being formed at the Institute of Maritime Science and Technology of Batroun and who the Israeli government would have presented and considered as “member of the Naval Force of Hezbollah.” He was kidnapped in early November 2024 by an Israeli naval command, which picked it up inside a villa that occupied on the Lebanese coast.

Hezbollah, surprised

The resumption of negotiations and the release of Lebanese prisoners took the main secretary of Hezbollah by surprise, Sheikh Naïm Qassem, who had just expressed his doubts about the success of Lebanese diplomatic efforts to solve the differences with Israel. Observers believe that this announcement provides the new government with a powerful argument to accelerate the application of resolution 1701, whose main objective is the disarmament of God’s proiraraní.

According to sources from the American State Department cited by journalist Bassam Abizeid, of the ICI-Beyrouh website, these events are part of the renewed attempts at normalization between Israel and some Arab countries. They should finally lead to the inclusion of Lebanon in the so -called Abraham agreements, led by Saudi Arabia and aimed at establishing full relations between the Jewish state and Riad. However, a diplomatic source under condition of anonymity, cited by the Lebanese newspaper L’Ont-le Jour, denied these rumors and declared that “it is not at all about political negotiations.”

Continuation of the attacks

Despite the diplomatic advance, the fighting continued throughout yesterday in the south of the country, including the attack of an Israeli drone against a car in the Nabatiyeh region. Apparently, the attack caused the death of Hassan Abbas Ezzedine, identified as Hezbollah Commander and head of the Anti -aircraft Defense Unit. Another drone attack in the Froun Kfarsir Valley, in Nabatiyeh’s hunt, caused at least one deadly victim, according to a report confirmed by the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
