The current generation consoles from Sony and Microsoft are PCs with modest PC hardware, and the fact that they share architecture with home computers allows for some fairly simple upgrades such as the use of M.2 SSD. Still, to ensure compatibility, manufacturers release specific M.2 SSDs for consoles like the PlayStation 5.

That is the case of the new Lexar Playan SSD in M.2 2280 format with PCI Express 4.0 interface designed to work on the Sony console although, of course, it can also be used on PC without any problems.

It is available, for the moment, Only in 4TB capacity Priced at $380, it boasts speeds of up to 7,400MB/s sequential data reads and up to 6,500MB/s sequential writes. It uses dynamic SLC and HMB caching to improve access speeds to common data. It promises a 3,200TB written lifespan and a 5-year warranty.

Later in the year, Lexar Play models will be available in 2TB and 8TB capacities, the latter of which will have a lifetime write capacity of 6,400TB.

All models include a compact metal heatsink to fit into the limited space of the console.
