Former Argentine President Alberto Fernández and Brazil’s Federal Electoral Court said Wednesday they will not be part of the team that will act as an observer in Venezuela’s presidential election on Sunday, fueling concerns about the fairness of the vote. On Monday, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized Maduro’s campaign rhetoric, who said there would be “a bloodbath” in the country if the opposition won the election. Fernández, who governed Argentina between 2019 and 2023 and had been invited by the Venezuelan electoral body as an observer, revealed on X that Maduro’s government asked him not to attend, after having agreed with Lula on comments urging respect for the election results. Chilean President Gabriel Boric also said that popular sovereignty “must be respected.”
