MADRID Dec. 8 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Lebanese Army deployed additional troops this Sunday along the northern and eastern border with Syria following the fall of the Syrian regime led by President Bashar al Assad at the hands of rebel forces led by the jihadist group Hayat Tahrir al Sham ( HTS) and its allied factions.
“Units throughout Lebanon are carrying out exceptional measures to maintain security and protect civil peace,” the Lebanese Armed Forces said in a statement published on the X social network.
The Lebanese Prime Minister, Nayib Mikati, held a conversation this Sunday with the head of the Army, General Joseph Aoun, and the country’s various security officials to address the situation, as reported on the aforementioned social network.
Mikati, who has indicated that the priority now is to “distance Lebanon from the repercussions of the events in Syria”, has asked the Lebanese population of all affiliations for “prudence” in the face of a “delicate moment” in the neighboring country.
Likewise, the prime minister has indicated that it is necessary to “put all capabilities into action” and be in contact with the relevant authorities for the release of hundreds of prisoners, many of them Lebanese, from Syrian prisons.
The offensive in Syria, launched on November 27 from the province of Idlib and led by Hayat Tahrir al Sham (HTS), has allowed the coalition of jihadists and rebels to take the Syrian capital, Damascus, as well as Aleppo and Hama, in the face of a constant withdrawal of government troops, backed by Turkey and Iran.
