Lebanon files complaint with UN over deaths of three rescuers in Israeli airstrikes

September 17 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Lebanese authorities on Tuesday filed a complaint with the United Nations Security Council over the deaths of three members of the Civil Defense in a bombing carried out by the Israeli army against the town of Frun, in the south of the country.

The petition was submitted by Lebanon’s permanent mission to the UN and includes a condemnation by Beirut of Israel’s “deliberate attacks” on humanitarian workers and health centres in the south of the country.

“Lebanon calls on the members of the UN Security Council to condemn these violations, hold Israel accountable and apply pressure to ensure its compliance with international laws and norms,” it said, according to the Lebanese state news agency NNA.

The bombing came amid more than 11 months of fighting between Israeli troops and the Shiite militia-party Hezbollah, following the attacks carried out on October 7, 2023 by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and other Palestinian factions against Israel, which left some 1,200 dead and nearly 250 kidnapped, according to Israeli authorities.

The escalation of clashes between Israel and Hezbollah – a group supported by Iran that has significant military and political clout in Lebanon – has raised fears of the possibility of an expansion of the conflict in the Middle East. In this context, the Israeli army presented its “operational plans” regarding Lebanon to the US Army last week.
