The leaders of the Coordination Framework, a group of Iraqi political formations related to Tehran, met this Friday at the residence of the pro-Iranian of the Al Fatá Alliance, Hadi al Amiri, and in the presence of the designated Prime Minister, Mohamed Shiaa al Sudani, marking the start of talks to form a new government in Iraq.
“The meeting will discuss the movement to form the government and the negotiations of blocs and parties regarding the ministerial formation,” an informed source told the Shafaq news portal.
Iraq’s newly appointed president, Abdulatif Rashid, has pledged to work to protect the Constitution, the rule of law and the interests of the people, and “to be the president of all Iraqis without discrimination.”
Likewise, Abdulatif, who proclaimed himself the winner after two votes in Parliament in which he defeated his rival, the former Iraqi president, Barham Salí, has thanked all the political forces and representatives of the people for their support, according to the news agency Nina news.
Iraq is in a political paralysis following the early legislative elections in October 2021, which have not yet led to the formation of a new government. In fact, Parliament was scheduled to hold the vote in February, although it was postponed due to disputes arising from the elections and the blockade by pro-Iranian parties and militias.
The Iraqi Presidency has been occupied by Kurdish politicians for two decades, within the framework of a power-sharing agreement that includes that the prime minister must be a member of the Shia community and the president of Parliament, a Sunni.
