Lavrov says that the ties between Russia and China "are a pillar" for "the triumph of International Law"

Aug. 5 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed this Friday that the “strategic partnership” between Moscow and Beijing “is one of the pillars of the movement for the triumph of International Law”, after a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi , on the sidelines of the annual ministerial meeting of the National Association of Southeast Asia (ASEAN) in Cambodia.

“I am convinced that our strategic association is one of the pillars of the movement for the triumph of International Law (…), above all of the Charter of the United Nations, which proclaimed the fundamental principle of the sovereign equality of states”, he said, according to the Russian news agency Interfax.

Thus, he has denounced that “the United States violates this principle every day everywhere” and has highlighted the importance of the initiative promoted by Russia and China to create a “group of friends in defense of the United Nations Charter”. “I think it’s a promising idea that deserves to be expanded,” she argued.

Lavrov has also stressed that he has meetings with Wang “on a regular basis.” “There are more and more things that require our constant attention and the adoption of practical decisions by our states,” he concluded.

The ASEAN ministerial meeting takes place amid tensions over the war in Ukraine and the recent visit to Taiwan by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, which provoked a harsh response from the Chinese authorities.
