Lavrov accuses the US of being "directly complicit" in Israel's offensive against Gaza and the conflict in Ukraine

He accuses the UN of its “double standards” due to the different treatment of victims in Ukraine and Gaza

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday accused the United States of being a “direct accomplice” to Israel in its offensive against the Gaza Strip and also in the conflict in Ukraine over supplying arms to both countries.

“By providing cover for Israel’s actions, supplying arms and ammunition, Washington, this is clear to everyone, has become a direct accomplice in the conflict, just as in the case of the situation in Ukraine,” he told the UN Security Council.

Lavrov said Washington’s goal “is not to save lives” and accused the US authorities of using armed conflicts to “score more points during the election campaign,” TASS news agency reported.

He also said that Moscow is in favour of a “permanent ceasefire” for the release of the hostages, as well as the Palestinian prisoners. “When this is done, we hope that conditions will be created for resuming negotiations on the implementation of the UN decisions to create a Palestinian state that coexists in peace and security with Israel,” he added.

DOUBLE STANDARD

Speaking at a press conference following a UN Security Council meeting, the Russian Foreign Minister accused the international body of “double standards” in its treatment of victims in the Gaza Strip and Ukraine.

In this regard, he explained that the spokesman for the UN Secretary General, Stéphane Dujarric, directly accused Russia of bombing the Okhmedit children’s hospital in kyiv. Moscow has previously claimed that Ukrainian anti-aircraft defences were responsible for the damage caused to the centre.

However, following several attacks on hospitals in Gaza after the 7 October attacks on Israeli territory, the UN issued a “lengthy commentary” from which, however, “it does not emerge who struck the blow,” Lavrov argues.
