Latin American leaders expressed their congratulations to the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who prevailed over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, after achieving the majority of electoral votes on Wednesday morning.
The first leader in the region to congratulate him, even before obtaining victory in key states, was his Salvadoran counterpart Nayibe Bukele, who wrote in the early morning, through his X network: “Congratulations to the president-elect of the United States of America, @realDonaldTrump.” “May God bless you and guide you,” he added.
Bukele, close to the Republican leader, wrote the message in English and added a photo with the American magnate.
Later, the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, reaffirmed his support for Trump: “Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory. Now, Make America Great Again. You know you can count on Argentina to carry out your task.”
The Argentine Foreign Ministry also congratulated Trump for the victory and the people of the United States for the “exemplary democratic day.”
Both Bukele and Milei participated in the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in February in Maryland.
“Good relations”
The government of the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, assured that it was willing to establish “good relations” with the United States, based on “dialogue, respect and common sense.”
“The people of Venezuela share historical ties with the people of the United States, with whom we aspire to walk a path of peace and social justice, where war, exclusion, and discrimination have no place, and where cooperation and mutual respect between nations, be the banner of international relations,” stated a statement from the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry.
Meanwhile, the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, told “all Mexicans” that “there is no reason for concern”after the Republican’s victory and assured that good relations will be maintained.
“To our countrymen, to Mexican businessmen: there is no reason for concern. Mexico always moves forward, we are a free, independent, sovereign country,” he said during his daily press conference.
“There will be a good relationship with the United States, I am convinced of it,” she added.
For his part, the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, one of the progressive leaders in the region, also congratulated Trump “on his electoral victory and return to the presidency of the United States.”
“Democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected,” he added.
Other progressive leaders, such as Colombian President Gustavo Petro, wrote on his X account a few hours later that “the American people have spoken and are respected.”
Petro, opponent of the now president-elect, congratulated him and pointed out that the dialogue between the north and the south of the American continent is still valid “and the reality of climate collapse will make me revolve around its solution.”
He also referred to his immigration policy by pointing out that “the only way to seal the borders is with the prosperity of the people of the south” and spoke of the “end of blockades”, without naming a particular country.
“The progressive possibility in the US could not applaud the genocide in Gaza,” he added.
In Central America
The president of Panama, José Raúl Mulino, expressed his congratulations on “the victory obtained in the presidential election of the United States and the people of that country for strengthening democracy” and emphasized that they will continue “working together on issues of migration, security and international trade”.
Xiomara Castro, Honduran president, also highlighted the Republican’s victory and a “peaceful and democratic day.”
“We express our best wishes for your administration to strengthen relations with Latin America and the Caribbean,” he added.
Guatemalan President Bernardo Arévalo wished Trump “many successes in this new stage in the White House” and extended his congratulations to the people of the United States of America, who have expressed themselves democratically at the polls.
He said that they will continue working with the United States “to strengthen our ties in the causes and under the common principles that have historically united us as nations during the 175 years of diplomatic relations and friendship between our peoples.”
Other Latin American leaders, such as the president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, indicated that “the future seems bright for the continent.”
For his part, the Paraguayan head of state, Santiago Peña, noted that “Democracy has once again demonstrated its strength!” and emphasized that his country and the United States “share deep democratic values” that they will continue to strengthen.
President Luis Lacalle Pou, of Uruguay, also congratulated the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, on his X account and indicated that his country will work “together with the new government to continue strengthening the relationship between our countries for the benefit of our people.”
