Latin American leaders celebrate the ceasefire in Gaza, seen as a step towards “peace” in the region

Regional leaders in Latin America, such as Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela and Paraguay, have celebrated the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip agreed this Wednesday by the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and Israel, and have mostly called for The truce is a step towards “peace” in the region.

His Venezuelan counterpart, Nicolás Maduro, has also welcomed the ceasefire and has asked that “humanity unite so that it is fulfilled” and “times of peace, of resistance, of justice be opened for the people of Palestine, for the Arab peoples and for the peoples of the world”. Some statements he made during his first speech to the National Assembly since he was sworn in as president on January 10.

In a very different tone, the Paraguayan authorities have made explicit their “support for the Government of Israel for its efforts to gradually release hostages and exchange prisoners through the ceasefire agreement in Gaza” reached this Wednesday.

Likewise, the Executive headed by Santiago Peña has “valued” the mediation work carried out by the United States, Qatar and Egypt to achieve said truce.
