Borrell, on being a PSOE candidate for the European elections: “I have a job that I cannot leave”

“Everyone understands that I have a job that I can't leave.” This is how the high representative, Josep Borrell, spoke about his hypothetical candidacy for the European elections on June 9 in response to journalists at an informative breakfast organized in Brussels by the New Economy Forum.

“The high representative has to continue until the end of the mandate,” responded the Catalan leader, who has not revealed whether the PSOE has asked him to repeat as head of the list.

The end of the mandate of the European Commission of which he is a part occurs in the autumn. The rules established by the community government do not prevent its members from being candidates in the European elections. “It allows election candidates to continue doing their work on the Commission, as long as their election campaign and responsibilities in office do not overlap and separate social media accounts are set up,” the rules state.

The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who is the candidate of the European People's Party, will remain in her position during the electoral campaign until the end of the mandate in the fall since it is still unknown whether she will achieve the necessary support. The same goes for Employment Commissioner Nicolas Schmit, who is the socialists' overall candidate. However, neither of them is part of the electoral candidacies.

However, the position of high representative would be incompatible with the collection of the minutes as an MEP, which would occur in the month of July.

In 2019, Borrell participated in the elections as Foreign Minister and then did not collect the MEP certificate, remaining in office until Pedro Sánchez chose him for one of the senior positions in the EU.

Feijóo says he is “sensitive” towards irregular migrants without clarifying whether he will vote in favor of their regularization

The leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, said this Tuesday that he was “sensitive” towards people who reside in Spain irregularly. Of course, Feijóo has left without answering what the party will vote on this afternoon in Congress regarding the popular legislative initiative that proposes regularizing these people.

“There is a debate that we must have and we must settle with the immigrants who live in Spain and who work in Spain but who do not obtain or have not obtained papers at the moment. And those can rest assured,” he said in an interview on the Cope network. “This party is sensitive to them and we will look for solutions for correct and legal social inclusion in our country,” she concluded.

Feijóo has assured that it will be at the meeting of the PP Steering Committee this morning when the decision on the ILP will be made.

The Supreme Court confirms the illegality of the Mixed Group with the councilors who split from Más Madrid from the last legislature

The Supreme Court has refused to accept for processing the appeal filed in February 2023 by the former Mixed Group of the Madrid City Council, initially made up of the four dissidents of Más Madrid –Marta Higueras, Luis Cueto, José Manuel Calvo and Felipe Llamas, but with the passage of time it ended up with only three members, one of them Higueras, who was free – against the ruling of the Superior Court of Justice of Madrid that ruled that said group be dissolved. Cueto and Calvo have been sentenced to pay 1,500 euros and the City Council another 500, according to the ruling.

This group managed to form in the previous legislature thanks to the votes of the PP and Ciudadanos, which gave it the green light in gratitude for the support for the reform of Madrid Central and then for the budgets of José Luis Martínez-Almeida and Begoña Villacís.

The spokesperson for Más Madrid, Rita Maestre, celebrated the Supreme Court's ruling this Tuesday, assuring that “this decision is a definitive judicial blow to transfuguismo and Almeida” highlighting what for her group was “a purchase of wills” by the mayor.

Maestre has assured that it is “good news” that the justice system agrees with Más Madrid but he wonders “who will repair the damage now”, remembering that his party appeared in the last municipal elections in worse conditions and with fewer resources. and political capacity than would have been the case if the illegal mixed group had then been dissolved. Más Madrid has announced that they will bring a proposal to the April plenary session for the PP to give explanations and has requested the “immediate” resignation of Almeida's “lieutenant”, Borja Fanjul, president of the plenary session and directly responsible “for this illegal cacicada.”
