the topics of the day
Good morning! On a Wednesday marked by the government control session in Congress, the news gives much more of itself, and our cover too. Here we include some of the most relevant issues published by elDiario.es:
–Spain faces the impossible dilemma of a field that multiplies irrigation in a country without water. Being a territory that is becoming increasingly arid and at the same time positioning itself as the second European agricultural power can only be achieved by dint of increasing irrigated farms, but intensive consumption puts many of its most precious ecosystems in check, such as Doñana or Las Tablas de Daimiel, explains the journalist Raúl Rejón in this report that opens our cover.
–Podemos and IU close their biggest alliance with agreements in ten communities and 40 provincial capitals. Despite the delicate (and conflictive) situation in which the formations to the left of the PSOE find themselves in the face of the next elections, it turns out that for the regional and municipal elections on May 28, there will be a broad confluence between Podemos, IU and Alianza Verde, with the fragmentation of the left, yes, in Madrid and the Valencian Community due to the refusal of Más Madrid and Compromís to form unity candidacies.
–Professor Vicenç Navarro was removed from Pompeu Fabra University for workplace harassment and abuse of power. Follow the series of investigations into cases of harassment and abuse at the University. In this latest ‘delivery’, the journalist Pau Rodríguez tells how secretaries and teachers from the university and from one of its affiliated centers report having suffered or witnessed intimidation, shouting and humiliation for two decades by the well-known economist, who retired in 2021 after a harassment complaint.
–The network of companies that unites the mayor of the PP in Estepona with real estate agencies on the Costa del Sol through Luxembourg. Another topic of investigation in elDiario.es on politicians related to shady economic affairs: José María García Urbano, ‘popular’ mayor of Estepona, and another PP mayor manage a company that participates in two Luxembourg firms: one of them controls Spanish companies with real estate in Estepona and Marbella; according to the Consistory, he is a mere “executor”.
–50 years of ‘The spirit of the hive’, its protagonists remember the masterpiece that nobody believed in. And finally, something kinder, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the feature film that established the director Víctor Erice and that today is considered one of the best films in history. In this review of half a century of the work, the journalist Javier Zurro tells how in 1973, with Franco still alive, Erice made his solo debut in the feature film with a poetic look at historical memory and the power of cinema.
