Lasso receives US senators, they promise to defend democracy

Two Democratic senators from the United States met on Monday with the president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, in the capital of that Latin American country. After the meeting, an agreement was revealed to strengthen economic ties and in favor of democracy.

“The United States are our friends and we will always defend those principles and values of liberal democracy regardless of powers, humanist, which is perfectly clear that its objective is to protect citizens, especially the most vulnerable,” Lasso said, according to statement from the presidency.

Other topics addressed were development, security, migration and investment, according to reports.

For the United States, Senator Bob Menéndez, the most senior legislator on the Foreign Relations Committee of the Upper House, affirmed that Washington “will always support democratic leaders who share our values.”

Menéndez later said through a Tweet feel honored with the reception of Lasso and his foreign minister, Gustavo Manrique, and reported that the meeting served to discuss joint initiatives “to promote security and economic prosperity” of both nations.

Menéndez was accompanied by fellow Democratic Senator Tim Kaine.

Lasso is facing the worst crisis in his nearly two-year tenure. In just over a month will face a trial for corruptionwhich was approved days ago by the National Assembly of his country, although -technically- a dismissal is unlikely before the Executive dissolves the Assembly, something that experts warn could happen.
