() — “Large-scale loss of life” has occurred in Rohingya camps and villages near Sittwe in Myanmar’s Rakhine state following Cyclone Mocha on Sunday, according to the NGO Partners Relief & Development.
Brad Hazlett, president of the NGO Partners Relief & Development, told by phone that a village where they had been working for a year “was totally destroyed by the cyclone and at least 20 people lost their lives there.”
He added that fatality figures shared on the Internet vary significantly and that his organization could not give an exact number.
“The telephone network is still unstable, roads are blocked and at least one concrete bridge was washed away, so it’s hard to confirm the numbers,” he told . “We have heard that many people are still missing or may be under destroyed shelters.”
