Landslide caused by monsoon rains kills at least five people in eastern Nepal

Five members of the same family, including two children, have been buried in an avalanche in eastern Nepal triggered by heavy rains in the area.

The incident took place in the municipality of Gulmi and the deceased have been identified as a married couple aged 56 and 47, their 30-year-old daughter-in-law and two granddaughters, according to the municipal police superintendent, Rajan Bhujel.

Rescue services are still searching for missing people in the surrounding area, Nepal News reported, as Nepalese authorities are forecasting further torrential rains in the coming hours in the provinces of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki.

According to the Weather Forecasting Division of the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, light to moderate rainfall is also occurring at one or two places in Lumbini and Karnali which will continue at least till tonight.
