Jul 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –
More than 30 people are missing after an avalanche of landslides has buried dozens of homes in the southwestern Chinese province of Sichuan.
The avalanche occurred in the town of Xinhua, where, according to official Chinese media, heavy rains caused a nearby mountainside to collapse. More than 40 homes in the town have been damaged.
The town is currently cut off from the public transport network due to the avalanche, reports the Chinese government’s international newspaper, the Global Times.
Local authorities have immediately launched a large-scale search and rescue operation to restore roads and communications and undertaken all necessary rescue work.
Hours earlier, it was announced that at least eleven people had died after a bridge collapsed in northwest China as a result of heavy rains hitting the region, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The incident occurred late on Friday in Zhashui district of Shangluo city in northwestern Shaanxi province, where the structure partially collapsed at around 8:40 p.m. (local time).
