Kyrgyzstan repatriates 22 women and children from Al Hol and Al Roj camps in northeastern Syria

Jul 20 (EUROPA PRESS) –

Kyrgyz authorities on Friday repatriated 22 women and children from the Al Hol and Al Roj refugee camps in northeastern Syria, the second such operation this year and the sixth since February 2023.

The eight women and 14 minors have been returned “safe and sound” to their homeland, the Kyrgyz Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its website.

In the statement, the Kyrgyz authorities thanked the United States Government for its “direct” support, as well as the “full” assistance of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and other international partners in carrying out this humanitarian mission, called ‘Aikol-6’.

The US State Department has welcomed this operation by the Kyrgyz Republic, the country that has carried out the most repatriations of nationals from northern Syria so far: 454 since February of last year, of which 121 so far in 2024.

Approximately 27,000 people from more than 60 countries outside Syria remain in al-Hol and Roj camps, the majority of whom are children under the age of twelve.
