Kuwait will hold legislative elections on September 29 to resolve the political gridlock

Aug. 28 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Kuwaiti government has called legislative elections for next September 29 with the intention of resolving the latest clash between the Executive and the chamber, dissolved earlier this month by order of the crown prince and ‘de facto’ ruler, Mishal al Ahmad al Jaber al Sabá, after denouncing “internal political tears due to personal interests.”

As soon as the date of the elections was announced, the official Kuwaiti news agency, KUNA, has pointed out that the Government will, in all probability, start tomorrow, Monday, the starting signal for the electoral race for the deputies who decide to present themselves to one of the 50 seats that make up the chamber, according to sources from the Ministry of the Interior.

Once the start of the race has been announced, the candidates will have ten days to complete the registration process.

The crown prince dissolved Parliament after more than a dozen deputies staged a protest inside the hemicycle to demand the formation of a new government, in another episode of the usual tension between the Kuwaiti executive and legislative branches in a country that has given Parliament more important powers than other of its neighbours.

The latest political crisis has led, for example, to delays in the approval of a state budget for fiscal year 2022/2023 and other economic reforms.
