Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba said Wednesday that Kiev authorities are willing to negotiate with Moscow on ending the war provided Russia acts “in good faith,” a condition that has not yet been met.
The Ukrainian diplomatic ministry said this in a statement in which it reviewed the meeting held this morning between Kuleba and his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in the town of Canton on the occasion of the Ukrainian’s visit to China.
“The main topic of discussion was the search for ways to stop Russian aggression and the possible role of China in achieving a lasting and just peace,” the Foreign Ministry statement said, in a way confirming China’s strategic position to facilitate peace.
In fact, Kuleba has asserted that “a fair peace in Ukraine is in China’s strategic interests” and has insisted on the need to put an end to Russian aggression in order to “restore peace and accelerate the recovery” of Ukrainian territory.
“Russian aggression is not only an obstacle to Ukraine’s development, but also hinders international stability, the development of good-neighbourly relations and, in particular, the development of trade between China and Europe,” the Ukrainian diplomat stressed.
Wang, for his part, conveyed to Kuleba China’s commitment to finding a political solution to the conflict, and recalled the peace plan presented by Beijing and Brasilia a few months ago.
Kuleba traveled to China on Tuesday for a four-day official visit during which his main objective is to discuss “ways to stop Russian aggression” as well as Beijing’s possible role in achieving “a stable and fair peace” in the context of the invasion unleashed in February 2022 by order of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
