Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba has said he is in favour of kyiv and Beijing holding “direct” talks on a peace plan for Ukraine after landing in China as part of a four-day official visit to the Asian giant at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.
“We must avoid competition between peace plans. It is very important that kyiv and Beijing engage in direct dialogue and exchange positions,” he said on Tuesday in a video posted on Telegram picked up by the Unian news agency.
Kuleba said he plans to hold “extensive, detailed and substantive” negotiations with Yi regarding a possible peace plan for Ukraine and stressed that Beijing should rethink its relations with kyiv “from the perspective of its strategic relations with Europe.”
Beijing skipped a peace summit in Switzerland in June to protest Russia’s failure to attend, although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has opened the door to Russian representatives attending if a second summit is held.
