Kristalina Georgieva is re-elected for a second term as head of the International Monetary Fund

April 13 () –

The current managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Kristalina Georgieva, has been re-elected this Friday “by consensus” for a second five-year term at the head of the organization starting October 1, 2024.

Georgieva, who was the only candidate to occupy the position, has been chosen after several conversations with the Executive Board of the Fund, as reported by the IMF itself in a statement.

The institution has provided “strong and agile leadership” during the current mandate of its representative, highlighting its “unprecedented response” to “major global crises”, the introduction of “new and innovative financing mechanisms” or “the ability to mobilize concessional loans to its poorest members.

“Looking ahead, the board welcomes Ms. Georgieva's continued emphasis on issues of macroeconomic and financial stability, while ensuring that the Fund continues to adapt and evolve to meet the needs of all its members. It recognizes her approach in strengthening the Fund's support to its members through effective policy advice, capacity development and financing,” they added from the IMF, ensuring that “the board looks forward to continuing to work closely” with Georgieva.

The former Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budgets in the Juncker Commission between 2014 and 2016 had already received the explicit and public support of Germany, Spain and France, as well as the European Union, to continue front of the institution.

The current mandate as managing director of the IMF of the 70-year-old Bulgarian politician and economist expires next September after five years in which the Washington-based institution has had to pilot the institution in the midst of the Covid pandemic. -19 and growing commercial and geopolitical fragmentation.
