() — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has called on his military to expand the country’s war deterrence in a “more practical and offensive” way, amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula, state news agency Korea Central reported. News Agency (KCNA).
Kim chaired a key meeting of the Central Military Commission on Monday, in which both he and the participants said they “clearly understand the current dire security situation” on the Korean peninsula, raised by the US and South Korea.
He stressed the need to expand Pyongyang’s deterrence ever faster in a more practical and offensive way and “effectively apply it as a measure for tighter control and management of the steadily worsening security on the Korean Peninsula,” according to KCNA.
Criticizing the recent joint US-South Korean military drills, the biggest in five years, the KCNA said the meeting made an “in-depth analysis” of the current situation, making it “a prerequisite to clarify the option DPRK military and make comprehensive preparations to move into powerful practical action.” DPRK stands for Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the official name of North Korea.
“He discussed practical matters and measures for the machinery to prepare various proposals for military action which by no means and ways of countering are available to the enemy and decided on the relevant resolutions by unanimous approval,” KCNA said.
KCNA did not provide any details of the “practical issues and measures” discussed at the meeting.
