The supreme leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has reiterated this Sunday that his country does not aspire to build nuclear weapons, but that if it did, “they could not prevent us.”
Khamenei believes that the nuclear issue is an excuse to go against Iran and has criticized the “lies” about Tehran’s supposed intentions to build atomic bombs, according to the Iranian official press.
“The enemies have been against us for 20 years with the nuclear issue because they know that the nuclear industry is the key to the country’s scientific progress,” Khamenei said during his visit to an exhibition of Iranian nuclear advances held at the Hoseiniya congress palace in the Imam Khomeini from Tehran.
Khamenei has cited his fatwa against the production, stockpiling and use of weapons of mass destruction, including nuclear ones, as being ‘haram’, a sin.
“The excuse of nuclear weapons is a lie and they know it too (…). We don’t want to move towards (nuclear) weapons because of our Islamic beliefs. Otherwise, they couldn’t have stopped us, just as they haven’t until now.” been able to stop our nuclear development,” he argued.
Khamenei has stressed that the nuclear industry fosters advances in sectors such as technology, economics and health and contributes to improving the standard of living of the people and increases the “political weight” of the country in the world.
In addition, Khamenei has advocated “commercializing nuclear products and services.” “There is good demand for our achievements in international markets and it can be used to benefit the country’s economy and income,” she argued to achieve “a strong Iran.”
