The Kenyan Senate approved this Thursday the dismissal of the country’s vice president, Rigathi Gachagua, who has not testified in his impeachment trial since he was in the hospital because he was suffering from chest pains, according to his lawyer, who had requested a postponement of the vote.
The president of the Upper House, Amason Kingi, has announced that the senators have resolved to remove Gachagua from his position through ‘impeachment’, so “consequently, he will cease to exercise his position”, as announced by the Senate through your profile on social network X.
Gachagua has become the first vice president to be removed from office in the history of the African country. MP Mewngi Mutuse accused him of eleven counts of money laundering and using his position to hand out government licenses to his companies, and senators have voted to maintain five of the charges, including inciting ethnic divisions and violating his oath.
Last week, an overwhelming majority of deputies in the National Assembly voted to remove him, paving the way for his two-day impeachment trial in the Upper House, where his lawyers have walked out in protest, according to the newspaper ‘The Star’.
