The Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga has announced the cancellation of the mobilizations called for this Monday and Thursday and his intention to open talks with the Government after months of protests over alleged electoral fraud in the August 2022 elections.
“We agree on the implementation of a balanced parliamentary process co-chaired by the two parties and supported by experts from abroad,” said the leader of the coalition Azimio la Umoja One Kenya, according to the newspaper ‘The Nation’.
The bipartisan commission proposed by his rival, William Ruto, must begin to function “immediately”, according to Odinga, who has warned that if the contacts “do not bear fruit” he “reserves the right” to return to the protests within a week .
Odinga has called demonstrations every Monday and Thursday to protest the high cost of living and against the government, which he considers illegitimate for considering the August elections fraudulent. The tension has been increasing to the point that the opposition leader recently denounced an alleged assassination attempt.
