Evgenia Kara-Murza, the wife of Vladimir Kara-Murza, sentenced to 25 years in prison in Russia for high treason, denounced this Monday that the lawyer of the Russian opposition leader has not been able to access the prison hospital to which he has been transferred amid suspicions about his state of health.

“Today my husband’s lawyer was once again denied access to the prison hospital where Vladimir Kara-Murza had been transferred last Thursday without any explanation,” she said in a message on the social network X.

His wife had already reported on Friday that his legal representative had arrived from Moscow to the Siberian prison where the dissident is serving his sentence and that, after several hours of waiting, the prison authorities finally refused to allow him to visit and, later, confirmed that the opposition figure had been transferred to another facility.

The lawyer was informed that the opposition politician is undergoing medical tests. “The politician suffers from polyneuropathy, a disease caused by two serious cases of poisoning, which is included in the list of diseases that prevent him from serving a sentence,” his wife recalled on Friday.

Kara-Murza was sentenced to 25 years in prison in April 2023 for several crimes – high treason, spreading false information about the military and cooperating with an undesirable organisation – and has been banned from journalism for seven years.

His sentence has been considered the harshest ever imposed by the Russian judiciary against an opponent and critic of the Kremlin. His situation in prison has been criticised on several occasions by human rights organisations.
