Priest Giles Fraser, himself a victim of abuse as a child, recently said in a BBC interview that Welby “has lost the confidence of the clergy”while Hartley warned that it will be difficult to “continue to have a voice on morality” under his leadership.
In his note, Welby argued that when he took office in 2013 was informed that the Police were aware of the alleged abuses committed for decades by Christian camp leader John Smyth, and that he “wrongly thought there would be a resolution.”

Welby’s tenure has spanned a decade of great turmoil within the Church of England, in which he has been forced to sort out disputes over gay rights and women clergy between liberal churches, mainly in North America and Great Britain, and their conservative counterparts, especially in Africa.
As the highest Anglican authority, Welby officiated at the coronation of Charles III in May 2023 and the weddings of Princes William and Harry.
