( Spanish) –– The first hearing that José Rubén Zamora Marroquín, director of the Guatemalan newspaper El Periódico detained since Friday, should have had this Monday, was canceled because they could not get patrols to transfer him to court, according to what his son José Carlos Zamora told .
The journalist was arrested at his home and is being investigated for money laundering charges, according to prosecutor Rafael Curruchiche. However, Zamora’s son told that this is an act of retaliation and an attempt at censorship due to the denunciations that the newspaper presented against the Guatemalan government.
So far, the Public Ministry has not assigned a new date for the hearing. Therefore, Zamora Marroquín will remain in the Mariscal Zavala Detention Center where he was transferred on Saturday.
