The Jordanian Foreign Minister, Ayman Safadi, began this Wednesday what is his first official visit to Syria since the start of the war, as part of a trip in which he wants to express Amman’s “solidarity” with the victims by last week’s earthquakes in southern Turkey, near the common border.
According to information published by the Syrian public television channel, ORTAS, the Syrian president, Bashar al Assad, has received Safadi in Damascus, without any details about the meeting having been released for the moment. Safadi’s visit to Syria is part of a trip in which he will also go to Turkey.
The main objective of this diplomatic tour is to address the humanitarian situation and the delivery of supplies to both countries to care for those affected by the earthquakes, which have left nearly 40,000 dead, as reported by the Jordanian state news agency, Petra. .
Jordan has so far sent several aid shipments to Turkey and Syria, despite the fact that bilateral relations with Damascus were severely damaged by the outbreak of war in 2011 due to the brutal repression of pro-democracy demonstrations in the wake of the known as the ‘Arab Spring’.
