25 Feb. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Jordan is preparing a four-way meeting between Palestinian, Israeli, American and Egyptian representatives to try to reduce regional tension after the last months of violence.
Various media outlets in the area have reported the meeting, which could take place next Sunday. First, the Jordanian daily ‘Al Ghad’ reported on Thursday talks for the meeting, the first of its kind in several years.
The key theme of the meeting will be to find a way for Israelis and Palestinians to refrain from undertaking unilateral measures — the construction of settlements in the case of Israel and the denunciation of the regional situation before the UN, in the case of the Palestinians — .
Diplomatic sources from ‘Al Ghad’ consider that the meeting comes at a critical moment and is a necessary step to reach a Palestinian-Israeli understanding that stops the deterioration and paves the way for a more general commitment in the future.
The London-based Arabic newspaper ‘Al Araby Al Jadeed’ had already reported on Friday that Egypt has tightened its contacts with Palestinian factions to prevent further escalation of violence.
According to the media sources, the Egyptian interlocutors especially tried to persuade the factions in Gaza not to fire rockets at Israel, as this would only push the Hebrew state to launch a military operation in the Gaza Strip.
