Syria also condemns the bombings and warns of “US complicity”
September 23 (EUROPA PRESS) –
King Abdullah of Jordan on Monday expressed his support for Lebanon in the face of a wave of Israeli bombings that claimed nearly 500 lives on Monday alone in attacks concentrated in the east and south of the country.
“Jordan supports Lebanon and its security, sovereignty and the safety of its citizens,” Abdullah said in a telephone conversation with Lebanese interim Prime Minister Najib Mikati, the official Jordanian news agency Petra reported.
The Hashemite monarch also defended the need for “a concerted international effort to stop the dangerous escalation before the entire region is dragged into open war.”
He called on the international community to support Lebanon in these “difficult times” to “protect innocent lives” and “act to end all forms of regional escalation.” Abdullah also indicated that the end of the escalation in the region must begin with the “immediate cessation of the war on the Gaza Strip.”
The Syrian government has also condemned Israel’s “brutal and cowardly attacks” against Lebanon and has pointed out that these actions would not have taken place without “the protection umbrella and complicity of the United States.”
“Persisting in its genocidal war, Israel continues to commit daily massacres against innocent and defenseless civilians in a crime unprecedented in modern history,” the Syrian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published by the official news agency, SANA.
Damascus has thus criticised the “aggression” against “the brotherly Lebanese people”. “‘Israel’ acts as if it were above international law and the UN Charter and immune from any responsibility for its atrocious actions,” it added.
