Jordan accuses Israel of trying to "politically assassinate" UNRWA and calls for international action

Syria warns that the Israeli Parliament’s decision “will deprive the Palestinian people of receiving the humanitarian assistance they need”

Oct. 29 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Government of Jordan has accused Israel on Tuesday of trying to “politically assassinate” the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), after the Israeli Parliament approved on Monday to ban the organization’s activities both in Israel as in the Palestinian territories.

The spokesperson for the Jordanian Foreign Ministry, Sufian al Qudá, has outlined in a statement published on his account on the social network Israel’s frantic efforts to assassinate her politically.

Thus, he stated that the measure is part of “the aggressive war against the Palestinian people” and added that “these procedures and practices are illegal and invalid”, while emphasizing that Palestinian refugees have the right to return now. receive compensation, in line with International Law.

Al Qudá has stressed that the Knesset’s decision represents “a flagrant violation of International Law and of Israel’s obligations as an occupying power in the occupied Palestinian territory,” before delving into the need for the international community to “act in a manner “immediate and urgent action to confront aggressive Israeli practices against Palestinians.

In this sense, he has advocated for “imposing deterrent measures to guarantee the protection of the Palestinian people, United Nations agencies and humanitarian organizations” and has warned of the “disastrous consequences” of the “continued” Israeli campaign against UNRWA to ” obstruct their efforts to provide their basic services and humanitarian aid to the Palestinians.”

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has joined the criticism, stating that “the Zionist occupation entity continues its flagrant violation of UN resolutions and International Law” with its measure against UNRWA, which “will deprive the Palestinian people to receive the humanitarian assistance he needs.

“Syria condemns this action, aimed at further undermining the rights of the Palestinians, especially the right of return, and imposing the policy of collective punishment against the Palestinian people,” he said, before pointing out that it adds to “the war crimes , genocide and forced evacuation” committed by Israel against the Palestinians.

For this reason, he has said that these measures are “illegitimate” and has called for international support for UNRWA to maintain “its important humanitarian role in support of the Palestinian people.” Furthermore, he has warned of the “catastrophic consequences” that the use of humanitarian aid as a “weapon of war” against the Palestinians can have.

VOTING IN THE KNESSET

A total of 92 of the 120 deputies of the unicameral Israeli Parliament have supported the initiative, while ten have voted against. For his part, the Commissioner General of UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini, has reacted to the approval of the law with a warning that it represents a “dangerous precedent” and that “it only deepens the suffering of the Palestinians.”

The bill, promoted by deputies Yulia Malinovsky, Dan Illouz and Boaz Bismuth – the first from Yisrael Beitenu and the other two from the main party of the far-right government coalition in Israel, the Likud – would effectively prevent the organization from operating in Israeli territory and the Palestinian territories by revoking a 1967 text that served as the basis for its activities.

Last March, Israel accused “a significant number” of UNRWA workers of “being members of terrorist organizations,” which led 16 countries to suspend or freeze funds, suddenly depriving this organization of $450 million and casting doubt on the continuity of its operations.

However, in mid-April, the external investigation led by former French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna ruled out that the Israeli authorities provided evidence to support the alleged terrorist links attributed to several UNRWA employees.
