John J. Hopfield, of Princeton University (USE) and Geoffrey E. Hinton, of the University of Toronto (Canada) have been recognized with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for “fundamental discoveries and inventions that enable machine learning and artificial neural networks”, as reported this Tuesday by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

The Nobel Prize in Physics has been awarded 117 times to 225 laureates between 1901 and 2023. John Bardeen has been the only one to have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics twice, in 1956 and 1972.

In 2023, Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for their “experimental methods that generate attosecond light pulses for the study of the dynamics of electrons in matter.”
