Joaquín Urías: "Our judges have a caste consciousness"

Joaquín Urías (Seville, 1968) is a professor of Constitutional Law at the University of Seville and served as a lawyer at the Constitutional Court. He is one of the most critical voices of the Spanish judicial system and has just published Justice in the dock (Arpa, 2024), a book in which he analyzes the conservative profile of the judicial career, the possible improvements to be introduced in the competitive access system and, also, formulas to combat the different cases of ‘lawfare’ that take advantage of the processes judiciary to influence policy. The elDiario.es columnist also considers that judges have a “caste consciousness” that prevents them from analyzing this phenomenon correctly and in depth.

One of the conclusions of the book is that “it seems clear” that there is “a problem” with judges. What is that problem?
