April 1 (Portaltic/EP) –

PlayStation 2 is one of the best-selling video game consoles, reaching 160 million units globally, as revealed by the now former president and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan.

PlayStation 2 first hit the market in Japan in March 2000 and at the end of that same year began its expansion to other parts of the world, such as North America, Europe and Australasia. SIE retired it in January 2013, with sales behind it estimated at 155 million units.

Now, Ryan, who has just left his position as president and CEO of SIE to retire, has shared a more updated figure for the sales success that was PS2: 160 million units globally, as he said in an interview in the official PlayStation podcast (episode 481).

Ryan began working at Sony Computer Entertainment in 1994 and has been involved with the PlayStation brand for 30 years, even before the European launch of the first console. Regarding the latest iteration, PS5, he claims that it “is on the right track” to become Sony's most successful console.

In the future, the former manager hopes that the PlayStation community will grow, especially after bringing the games to PC and with the adaptations that games like The Last of Us, Uncharted and Gran Turismo have had.

PlayStation 2 leads the ranking of the best-selling consoles, with its 16 million units. They are followed by Nintendo DS (154 million) and Nintendo Switch (139 million). PlayStation 5, the most recent from SIE, places its sales at around 55 million units.
